When a PORN Star Becomes Your Twitter Follower!

The Dangers of Social Media

There she was – following our church activities as a TWITTER follower.

A porn star. With a topless photo as her avatar (profile picture). Promoting her twitter page, website, videos, links to smut.

And our church IT director had neither noticed her nor was he doing anything to delete her dirty, provocative presence.

My wife & I were stunned. I immediately texted the church media director, who was astonished. Said he’d get in touch asap with his IT guy. An hour later we had been updated that the “porn girl” was now gone from the Twitter followers.

Three days later? She was still making mischief.

The IT person had done nothing. Passive-aggressive. I’ll do it (remove her). Then put off deleting her to another day.

We texted the media director again. Who assured us everything was fine. It wasn’t. We told him why. He got upset with us. “What’s the big deal? She’s gone. My IT guy said so.” We told him why: Porn star. Still a follower. On our church Twitter page.

It eventually got resolved. After 4-5 days, she was finally, mercifully gone.

Herein lies the challenge with church media in a digital age: You need to monitor on a constant basis (2-3x a week at least) who is following you on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube & Twitter. Canvas all the sites where your organization has a media presence.

Watch what they say & post. Notice their activity. Their language. Be a TRAFFIC COP.

Monitor Your Ministry's Social Media Sites

Monitor Your Ministry’s Social Media Sites Frequently

Yes, you might rub people the wrong way sometimes with your actions and decisions. Fair enough. It’s the difficult price a ministry pays to step into the world of social media. To walk through the global marketplace of ideas, news, entertainment and opinions – and instant information.

But the opportunities for impact, storytelling and engagement far outweigh the bad…and negative. Social media is, at its essence, about reaching people –  their minds, but their hearts too.

It starts with sparking a conversation – whether casual or meaningful.

To minimize potential damage, check your social media sites frequently. 99% of the people usually play by the rules. It’s the tiny 1% you often have to watch out for.

They either play nice, or it’s time for you to banish (block & delete) them from the media conversation for the good of everyone else…and your ministry.

Organizations need to be diligent to protect their character and integrity….. so must we as individuals.

Unless you keep a steady vigilance, you just might have a porn star posting smut to your church followers.

  1. Wait. Twitter’s a one way medium. She can’t post to your other followers because she’s following you. What a sad commentary – a church not willing to allow a potential believer – a sinner – follow and learn about their church activities. How ridiculously hypocritical, short-sighted and anti-Christ-like.

    • Hi Paul, when I say that the porn star was making mischief…what I meant was that A) she was trolling for new customers by following a church. Topless avatar. Link to her porn site. Smart lady who knew how to leverage social media. B) By becoming a Twitter follower of our church her media/IT guy now had access to everyone’s twitter handle. Again, potential customers. Sorry if I wasn’t clearer.

As for “a church not willing to allow a potential believer – a sinner – follow and learn about their church activities” – I understand your point. We should not be judging, should be accepting. But in the end, the porn star’s only motivation wasn’t searching for spiritual truth, meaning, forgiveness and acceptance. It was to make money off her lurid porn site. That’s where the hypocrisy resides. The other issue is: INTEGRITY. Our church’s. Sorry if you disagree with that principle. By allowing her to remain on the Twitter follower list we’ve told 1000s of church members that we condone porn stars using our Twitter account (Yes, one way) to offer their sexual services.

Now…she would have been welcome as a Twitter follower if she had a picture of herself clothed w/o a link to her website. She’d be welcome @ our church, as long as she walked in with clothes on. It’s a judgement call.
